China has become the world largest market for modified plastics

with a market size reaching 310.7 billion yuan and demand reaching 32.25 million tons in 2024, representing a year-on-year increase of 5.6%.

As an important component of the new materials field, modified plastics have become a key direction for the development of national strategic emerging industries. These plastic products, processed and modified through methods such as filling, blending, and reinforcement to improve properties such as flame retardancy, strength, and impact resistance, are increasingly replacing traditional materials in downstream sectors due to their superior cost-effectiveness.

With the deepening trend of "replacing steel with plastics" and "replacing wood with plastics," and the booming development of emerging fields such as new energy, bio-based new materials, humanoid robots, and the low-altitude economy, the modified plastics industry is ushering in a new round of development opportunities. The global technological and industrial competitive landscape is being rapidly reshaped; proactively predicting cutting-edge and disruptive technologies and planning the development of emerging and future industries are crucial for building new national competitive advantages. Modified plastics are intermediate products in the petrochemical industry chain. They are primarily processed from five major general-purpose plastics and five major engineering plastics as the plastic matrix, possessing characteristics such as flame retardancy, impact resistance, high toughness, and ease of processing.

In the chemical industry chain, modified plastics occupy a crucial bridging position. Upstream, they receive raw materials for petroleum-based or bio-based synthetic resins (accounting for 75%-85% of costs), while downstream, they are widely used in traditional fields such as automobiles, home appliances, and electronics, and are rapidly penetrating high-tech industries such as new energy, biomedicine, and aerospace.

Modified plastics are becoming a consumer trend: Modified plastics is a plastics industry sector with a wide scope, high technological content, and the potential to generate significant economic benefits. Due to its superior cost-effectiveness, it is being used in an increasing number of downstream sectors. It can be said that modified plastics have become a consumer trend, and this trend is underpinned by the following five factors.

High Performance: Modified plastics not only retain the advantages of traditional plastics, such as low density and corrosion resistance, but also exhibit significantly improved physical and mechanical properties, including high strength, high toughness, high impact resistance, and wear and shock resistance. Furthermore, the improved overall performance of plastics lays the foundation for their widespread application in downstream fields.

Low Cost: Compared to other materials, plastics benefit from high production efficiency and low density, resulting in lower costs. The cost per unit volume of plastic is only about one-tenth that of metal. Government Policy: China's mandatory "3C" certification system imposes strict regulations on the safety performance of products listed in the catalog, thereby promoting the widespread application of flame-retardant plastics in home appliances, IT, and communications. Consumer Upgrade: With rising living standards, people are pursuing superior product performance, demanding that home appliances and other products be more aesthetically pleasing, safe, and durable. This places higher demands on the upstream plastics industry, requiring better processing performance, mechanical properties, durability, and safety.

Technological Factors: While over 1000 polymers have been discovered worldwide, only a few dozen have truly practical applications. Developing new polymers not only requires huge investments but also faces uncertain application prospects. Conversely, modification technologies can improve the performance of existing polymers to meet industry demands while simultaneously reducing the cost of some high-priced engineering plastics, becoming an effective way to develop the plastics industry.

Modified Plastics Market Overview and Expansion:

Over the past decade, China's modified plastics industry has maintained rapid development, with continuous improvement in market size and technological level. In 2024, modified plastics production reached 33.2 million tons, with a CAGR of 12.6% over the past five years. During the same period, the combined production of the five major general-purpose plastics in the upstream and downstream related chains reached 95.6 million tons, primary plastic production reached 127.52 million tons, and plastic product production reached 77.08 million tons, with CAGRs of 6.8%, 4.9%, and 0.3% respectively over the past five years. The development trend of the modified plastics sector is significantly better than that of upstream and downstream industries, and its industrial upgrading characteristics are becoming increasingly prominent.

From a product structure perspective, modified polypropylene (PP) accounts for approximately 26.82%, modified polyethylene (PE) approximately 19.92%, and modified ABS approximately 10.06%, highly matching my country's home appliance and automotive industries, with these two sectors accounting for over 50% of usage combined.

Modified plastics for new energy vehicles are undoubtedly a "hotspot" category. Compared to traditional gasoline vehicles, new energy vehicles have a more urgent need for lightweight, high-temperature resistant, and insulating flame-retardant materials. For example, glass fiber reinforced nylon (PA) is needed for battery pack shells, high-temperature resistant PPS plastics are used for motor components, and modified polypropylene (PP) materials are used for lightweight structural components of the vehicle body. These materials not only reduce vehicle weight and increase driving range but also ensure the safety of the battery and electrical system.

Modified Plastics Technology Trends:

High Performance and Environmental Upgrades. Currently, modified plastics technology is upgrading in four directions:

1、Engineering of General-Purpose Plastics. Engineering plastics have good performance but are expensive. With advancements in modification technology, general-purpose plastics such as PP and ABS can achieve strength and heat resistance approaching that of engineering plastics through reinforcement and blending, but at a lower cost. This allows for the replacement of engineering plastics with modified general-purpose plastics in many applications.

2、 engineering plastics are becoming more high-performance. As industries such as automotive, electrical, electronics, communications, and machinery upgrade, they place increasingly stringent demands on engineering plastics for specific applications. They must not only be able to "make materials" but also understand their application scenarios. For example: Energy-saving lamp bases: high temperature resistance, yellowing resistance; Chip trays: flexural resistance, antistatic properties; Electronic connectors: high flame retardancy, high heat resistance, high flowability; Mechanical gears: wear resistance, high rigidity, high dimensional stability.

3、Nanocomposite technology. By adding a small amount (2%–5%) of nanoparticles, the performance of nano-modified plastics can be significantly improved, giving them great potential in packaging, electronics, and electrical fields. For example, adding 5% organomontmorillonite to PA6 can increase its heat distortion temperature by approximately 1.5 times; adding nano-clay to PET can reduce its oxygen permeability by 100 times compared to pure PET.

4、 Environmental Protection. Global environmental standards are becoming increasingly stringent, with halogen-free, low-smoke, and low-toxicity flame-retardant systems becoming the trend. EU regulations such as RoHS and WEEE impose strict restrictions on halogens and heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium, forcing modified plastics companies to accelerate the development of environmentally friendly formulas and process upgrades, moving towards a greener and safer direction. Multiple Policy and Regional Benefits Continue to Unleash Potential.

As an important component of the new materials industry, modified plastics receive strong support from national policies. In terms of policy, the 14th Five-Year Plan proposes to promote the development of strategic emerging industries such as new materials and accelerate the innovation and application of key core technologies. The "Guiding Opinions on Promoting High-Quality Development of the Petrochemical Industry during the 14th Five-Year Plan" issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other departments proposes that by 2025, the level of chemical new materials should reach 75%, and the development of high-end polyolefins and other products should be accelerated.

Meanwhile, starting in 2024, large-scale equipment upgrades and consumer goods trade-in programs have been implemented, ushering in a new wave of upgrades for key categories such as automobiles and home appliances. In 2025, relevant policies were further strengthened and expanded, from subsidies for vehicle scrapping and replacement to trade-in programs for home appliances, all of which are tangibly boosting sales of new energy vehicles, home appliances, and consumer electronics—major users of modified plastics—providing a solid demand foundation for the industry.

Regionally, my country's modified plastics industry is highly concentrated in the southeastern coastal region. The four provinces of Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Shandong account for approximately 80% of the national output, with Guangdong alone exceeding 40%. Regions like Guangdong have significant advantages in market environment, research capabilities, logistics, and local policy support, attracting a number of leading enterprises and forming a relatively complete industrial cluster.

Overall, China's modified plastics industry already possesses the fundamental characteristics of a large market, stable growth, and broad prospects. On one end, it connects to the manufacturing upgrade of "replacing steel and wood with plastics," and on the other end, it meets the material demands of emerging industries such as new energy vehicles, bio-based new materials, humanoid robots, and the low-altitude economy. Against the backdrop of continuous technological advancements, increasingly supportive policies, and the rapid rise of leading enterprises, modified plastics are transitioning from a behind-the-scenes material to one of the key players in the new materials industry.
