The 16949 certification system, based on ISO 9001, incorporates technical specifications specific to the automotive industry and is a shorthand for the automotive industry quality management certification system.


I. IATF 16949:2016
In March 2002, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published an industry-wide quality system requirement. Its full name is "Quality Management Systems—Particular requirements for the application of ISO 9001 by organizations producing parts and related service parts for the automotive industry," and its English name is IATF 16949.

Because automotive parts suppliers in the US and Europe simultaneously provide products to major OEMs, it is easy for suppliers to undergo duplicate certifications for different standards. Therefore, a set of internationally recognized automotive industry quality system standards was needed to simultaneously meet the requirements of major OEMs. TS16949 was thus created to address this need. In response to the ISO 9001:2015 quality management system standard, the standard was updated to IATF 16949:2016 in 2016.
IATF 16949 applies only to automotive OEMs and their direct component manufacturers. These manufacturers must be directly involved in automotive production, possess manufacturing capabilities, and add value to their products through these capabilities. Certification companies are required to have at least 12 consecutive months of production and quality management records, including complete records of internal and management reviews, meeting key requirements such as quality management system, process management, and customer satisfaction. Certified companies demonstrate their ability to manage operational processes more efficiently and improve product quality; they can showcase their quality management capabilities to customers through third-party certification, enhancing their market competitiveness; and the certification emphasizes the role of standards in supply chain cooperation, reducing risks through shared adherence to and use of unified standards.
II. Yujie's Participation in Automotive Plastics Standards
On March 1, 2023, a series of seminars on the "Specifications for the Use of Recycled Plastics in Automotive Industries" were held in Shanghai. Experts and representatives from raw material companies such as Yujie Industry participated in the meeting, jointly contributing to the green, low-carbon, and circular development of the automotive industry. Participants introduced the progress of the draft standard system development for "Specifications for the Use of Recycled Plastics in Automotive Industries Part 1: General Rules" and "Specifications for the Use of Recycled Plastics in Automotive Industries Part 2: Polypropylene (PP)," the introduction of the standard framework, and the next steps in the standard research plan.

In addition, to promote the application of PC/ABS in the automotive field as a substitute for steel, improve the design and manufacturing level of automakers, help new energy vehicles participate in international market competition, and promote environmentally friendly and sustainable development, the company is actively participating in the drafting of the group standard "Automotive Alloy Plastics PC/ABS Special Materials." III. Application of PCR Materials in the Automotive Field
On July 13, 2023, the European Commission published a regulatory proposal on End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs). According to the European Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan, the ELV proposal builds upon and will replace two existing directives: Directives 2000/53/EC and 2005/64/EC on end-of-life vehicles. The proposal proposes increasing the use of recycled materials in new cars, specifying that new cars should contain at least 25% recycled plastics.

In recent years, PCR materials (post-consumer materials) have gained significant traction in the automotive industry. Volvo, BMW, Ford, Michelin, and other car and tire manufacturers have successively increased the use of PCR materials in their new cars and tires.
More than half of the interior trim panels in the Volvo C40 Recharge are made from recycled plastics;
BMW's innovative flagship electric vehicle... ix will use recycled nylon waste to make synthetic fibers for carpets and floor mats; Ford uses 3D printing waste to recycle and process automotive parts such as fuel line clamps;
Michelin plans to use an "enzymatic recycling method" to recycle waste plastic bottles into rPET for tire manufacturing;
as countries around the world clarify their phased goals for proportional use of recycled plastics in plastic products, more and more major brands are implementing PCR projects.
